Beginning Of Mice and Men
You have now begun Of Mice and Men, and we’ll be using our blogs as a major area for hashing out ideas and thinking about the book. Take a moment right away to create a new category called Of Mice and Men, and remember to stick your articles from this unit under that category.
I would like your first article to begin by considering what you saw in the movie about The Grapes of Wrath. Essentially, what I’d like you to do is explain what you learned about Steinbeck and his style from that movie, and then to combine that knowledge with what you have read from Of Mice and Men so far to predict the theme and setting of Of Mice and Men. A couple questions that might guide you in thinking about the video on The Grapes of Wrath (you don’t have to answer these – they’re supposed to help you if you’re stuck):
- What kinds of characters did Steinbeck create for The Grapes of Wrath?
- What were some of the conflicts in The Grapes of Wrath?
- What was the setting like in The Grapes of Wrath and what can you discern of the setting so far in Of Mice and Men?
When you finish discussing your thoughts on the film, please examine some of the key lines from the first 16 pages, which I’ve posted on the class website. In future chapters, I’ll have you pick out the important lines. In this case, I’d like you to choose one line, copy and paste it into your blog article, and write about the significance of it.
I’d like each of the sections to be between 5 and 7 sentences and your full blog to be between 12 and 15 sentences. Put some thought into this, and if you have to write a draft of your blog outside class and bring it in next time to type, that is fine. The point is, chew on this article, don’t just spit out the first thought that popped into your head.
