Obstacles

Give me a landscape made of obstacles

These are the words of Dana Gioia, from his poem, “Rough Country,” which is our poem of the week and the way we will begin our year. We will take a tiny bit
of liberty with his poem and pull aside that line and make it our own, so we can discuss obstacles. What is an obstacle, and what obstacles have you overcome? You can talk generally, but what I’d really like to see is one solid story describing one obstacle you’ve encountered and overcome.

If you do not have one you’ve overcome, think of any obstacle and describe what makes it an obstacle. Maybe you can explain how you would plan to overcome it or why you did not overcome it. Or, if you don’t like our poem or the line from it, explain what you do not like and tell a story to dissuade us from the idea that a landscape full of obstacles is something to be desired.

Make your entry a bare minimum of 10 sentences, but if you’d like “A” points, hit 12-15 sentences.
