Finishing The Old Man

Okay, we have finished The Old Man and the Sea. I would like you to focus on three areas for this blog article, and I’d like you to extend to at least 250-300 words. Be sure to quote the book at least once. The areas are these:

  1. Your initial reaction upon reaching the finish.
  2. Questions that remain pressing for you, even as we’ve finished the story.
  3. Symbols - What do you see in the book as symbolic or suggestive of something more?

Remember to link your article back to this one’s specific url (that’s the long url), and do not be afraid to reference another classmate’s observation if you think it’s a good one.

  1. [...] I am very happy that we finally finished this book. It was a book that you really had to think about. It reminded me of when we read Romeo and Juliet or even a Mid Summer Night’s Dream. You have to stop every so often to think about what the author is trying to tell you. The only question I still have is why was this fish SO important? He kept saying he missed the boy and that he was tired and sore but he never left that fish and after he caught the stupid thing he regretted it. But I think in a way that the fish almost symbolized his life. How to the boy the old man’s life was beautiful and the fish’s life was beautiful to the old man. Maybe the story was supposed to get us to appreciate our life more. The book was very odd but meaningful all at the same time. It might make someone realize what is important in their lives. If it’s achieving something or maybe just remembering who it is who is important to you.  It was a short book. But a good one. I just don’t like that it’s a book that you really have to sit and think about. I mean books like that are good but time consuming and it almost makes you not want to read that book. Then again maybe it’s just that English is at the end of the day and so we pay more attention of getting out of class then the actual lesson! October 10th, 2007 at 1:05 pm [...]

  3. [...] My initial reaction on reaching the finish of the book was thats it? I felt that it just kind of ended even though there was more that could have been said. I felt that it is almost a sad ending also because I get the impression that the man will not live much longer. I think that the boy is deeply saddened by seeing the man home again in such a terrible condition. I also think that he has realized how little time they really have left together. As the boy went out the door and down the worn coral rock road he was crying again. [...]
