Thoreau: Crazy Treehugger or Profound Thinker?
Henry David Thoreau is often considered a “writer of great sentences,” and it’s a label that is backed up by the number of times his writing is quoted. If you head to
Quotations Page.com and the Thoreau quotes, you’ll find 64 different quotes – that’s a lot, and the reason seems to be his knack for writing profound, concise sentences.
As you read the textbook’s excerpt of Walden, you took note of some of his great sentences and jotted them down. Now, in your blog, I’d like you to compile your thinking in a more formally written manner. Tell us as readers what you read and what struck you. Include at least three lines that struck you while reading and explain why they struck you and what you think about them. Have a conversation with Thoreau and tell him what you think
After discussing those particular quotes, generalize your thinking about Thoreau. What is your reaction to the man, his opinions, and what he did? Do you admire him? Reject him? Wish you could have done what he did? Do you think people are crazy for wanting to do things like this? Does he deserve the following he has?
